I messed my phone up
« on: December 29, 2013, 08:41:58 AM »
first, i am a 76 yr old luddite.
while trying to set my phone up by entering apn stuff to connect to att (straight talk) to get data i screwed things up royally.
now when i turn the phone on several of things happen
1 the screen goes dark after a few seconds
2 when i call it back up a querty keyboard appears at the bottom and an entry space appears half way up the screen.
3 when i swipe to get to the home page, the camera fills the screen and i cant get rid of it.
my phone is a g2 d802 intl version and when i went on line to the help center live chat was told that they couldnt help me because of the intl version.
i guess i am too dumb for a smart phone, this is my first one.

LOL.  You're not too dumb for a smart phone Peter.   And you didn't break your phone.  All you probably need to do is set it back to factory restored settings.   I don't know the procedure off hand but I'm sure someone here in the forum can walk you through it.  Anyone wanna help Peter out???

Perhaps before doing a factory reset, have you tried just rebooting?  That is, not just shutting down and turning it back on but rather, shutting it down and um, turning it back on.  LOL, okay -- what I meant was, hold the power button down until a popup window comes up, and select "Power off and restart".

It sounds like you are having trouble with the lockscreen. The default lockscreen will allow you to launch the camera app, and it also sounds like you have a password set (why the keyboard is coming up).  If you don't enter anything or swipe or do anything on the lockscreen, it turns off after a few seconds, this is normal.  Usually when you turn on the phone (by double tap or power button), it expects you to swipe to unlock, enter a pattern to unlock or a password to unlock; or launch the camera or whatever other icons are on your lockscreen (I've changed mine around so I don't remember what the defaults are).

Glad to hear you got that solved!

You didn't mention what model of G2 you have or your carrier, or I missed it.  For the D-803 (Canada model) and the few manuals I checked (D-800 AT&T, D-802 International, VS980 Verizon, LS980 Sprint), the APN settings are accessed as follows or similar:

- Settings
- Tethering & networks
- Mobile networks
- Access point names

Then click the Menu key and select 'New APN'.  From there I believe you can enter your Straight Talk APN.

Let us know how you make out, and if unsuccessful, let us know your model and carrier.

EDIT: woops, you did say it was a D-802 (International version), sorry -- I missed that the first time 'round.  The above instructions should work for you to get at the APN settings though.  :)

You probably have this info already but these are apparently the Straight Talk APN Settings, if you don't have them:

Name - Straight Talk
Apn - tfdata
MMSC - http://mms-tf.net
Mms proxy - 66.209.11.33
Port- 80

Of course, use what you were given first; but perhaps try these if they don't work.
