Spelling Correction is a function of the keyboard.  Are you using the LG Keyboard, Android Keyboard (AOSP), or a 3rd party keyboard?

The setting to enable Spelling Correction should be under Settings -> Language and Input, here you can change keyboard settings, along with any dictionary settings, etc.

What carrier are you on (in case this differs by carrier)?

Glad you figured it out!  I found that, while the spell correction is decent, the predictions were a bit off for my taste.  I was used to coming off of Swiftkey but I wanted to give the LG keyboard a chance but finally switched to Swiftkey.

I must admit though -- no matter which keyboard one is using, as the G2 is my first device with soft keys, I am finding the soft keys annoying while typing.  I'll be typing a message and suddenly I've exited to the desktop (pressed the escape/return softkey).  Fortunately, you can just go back to the app you were in and pick up where you left off but still a bit annoying.
